Europe 2022
Baja California to Mainland Mexico (Nov 2021 - March 2022) 🇲🇽
During the pandemic, we felt the need to travel. Since returning to Portugal was not possible we bought a 1995 Mitsubishi Delica Camper. We call her Bulla. It was so exciting to drive south to the beautiful beaches and warm climate of Mexico's Baja California. We traveled the Baja peninsula for many years, but what made this trip different was our plan to ferry from La Paz to Mazatlán and then drive south to explore the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of mainland Mexico. It was fabulous to be on the road again!
Boondocking on Playa de los Muertos for New Year’s Eve
TMC Ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan
Cargo Ferries ⛴ are clearly not designed for passengers. They are trucker commercial vessels. We took the TMC cargo ferry for two reasons. First, in these time of Covid we could sleep in our own bed and cook our meals in our Mitsubishi Delica camper. Second, we could stay with our family pet and take her for walks on the deck of the ferry. 14 hours is a long time on a ferry, but our ride crossing the Sea of Cortez was a blast! Our video shares how we did all the above and more. The TMC ferry from La Paz, Baja, to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, on the mainland of Mexico has no frills, but it offers fabulous views of the Sea of Cortez, a fabulous Sunset and Sunrise, and we actually saw a pod of whales. Go or call the TMC office before the day of travel to make your reservation. Tell them your date of travel and the staff person will write your name down on the list. It is that simple. Arrive early at the ferry terminal. Have all you paperwork ready. Show your Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP) and passport. Weigh and be measured. Buy your ticket. Then follow the directions of the ferry staff to your ferry and wait. Spoiler—your stress level will increase until you turn your rig off after you board. Enjoy!

2020 International Travel Postponed, Now Camping California
March 17, should have started our 2020 travel plans. Sadly we postponed our trip to Cuba due to COVID "social distancing." After a month in Cuba our plan was to visit Tokyo, then Milan, and then return to Portugal to pick up Nulla. Our 2020 goal was to drive to Greece and then Turkey. Instead we spent Jan to Nov social-distancing at home doing all the things we love to do. Long days gardening—planting tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, trimming the persimmon and cherimoya trees. Working on instruments—putting new skins on 3 conga drums, lacing a Covid 19 Shekere (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shekere), and making a Barril de Bomba traditional Puerto Rican drum for playing bomba music. Up-grading our homemade e-bike sidecar. Making homemade vino. Brewing kombucha. Lot's of fun things to do at home!
Realizing it will be a while before it is safe to continue our drive around the world we brought a 17-foot camper in August we named Bulla. Go to “Our Rigs” above to take a look at Bulla. After making all the needed repairs and upgrades we are on the road again—camping California’s national parks and BLM land. The mountains, deserts, and beaches are open. Fresh air, daily hikes, and beautiful sunsets makes social-distancing much easier. Be healthy and safe!

Covid Vaccine #1
Time to do some planning.
Covid Project - We rebuild our sidecar
Our sidecar burned mysteriously in August 2019. Although we have been grounded since the Covid 19 rebuilding our sidecar is one of our major accomplishment. We look forward to many safe and fun rides.
Pismo State Beach, California (2021)
Pismo Beach is a long-time favorite. We camped here with our granddaughters when they were young girls. It is part of a beautiful coastline and the traditional territory of the Chumash people. We stayed at the Pismo State Beach Oceano Campground for ten days and sat on the beach to breathe and reset our energy. Of the three state beach campgrounds we like the Oceano Dry Camp best. Sadly the state parks of California were closed due to Covid and we were asked to leave.
Lodi, CA Wine and Burrito Tasting
In 1988, a very good friend moved to Lodi and it became a weekend place to go. In November, we visited Lodi and to our surprise it is now home to more than 80 wineries. The old wineries are still there but so many more have grown up throughout the area. As home winemakers it was exciting to visit the wineries and in camp in the vineyards.

Mojave Desert
Our first Camping with Bulla.
We call her Bulla
Our granddaughter named her Bulla. Since March we have social distanced at home and we now realize it will be some time before returning to international travel. Bulla will be our rig for the Americas. She is from Japan, 25 years old, Mitsubishi Delica JB500 2.5 Turbo Diesel, 4X4, 5 speed manual transmission. Bulla will be very comfortable hanging out with the mountain goats but we will need to avoid the US freeways when possible.
Social Distancing Projects In Our City of Angels
Learning how to make Kombucha
Kombucha 2nd Fermentation, Bottling and Flavoring
Inspired by life, with hand sanitizer and wearing face masks, we headed out on our homemade electric bike w/sidecar to visit our City of Angels. Enjoy the sound of LA street musicians. We plan to travel the USA on another rig Nulla 2 ... stay tune. Be safe. Black Lives Matter.❤️
Making Barril de Bomba - Traditional drum of Puerto Rico
April 2020 - Thank you to all those on the frontlines fighting Covid 19❤️. Let's do our part by staying home. 🙌🏾 🙏🏽
Enjoy the slide show. Stuff we do while social distancing at home.
We are home for the winter! ❤️ Los Angeles!
After almost 10 months on the road, we are home for the winter in Los Angeles! We left last year on December 8, 2018, and picked up Nulla, our home on wheels, on January 17, 2019, in Zeebrugge, Belgium. We woke up to 8” of snow, but the beer was good! We quickly headed south looking for sunshine, through France in the rain and snow, then down to the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Finally, in Valencia, we saw the sun.! When we crossed into Morocco, we stored our winter clothes. We spent over 5 months in Morocco, soaking in the culture and beauty of the country. It was hard to leave, but we hope to return. We ferried back across the Straits of Gibraltar and spent almost 3 months in southern Portugal on the Algarve & Costa Vicentina. Nulla is now stored for the winter in Portugal, and we are home in the city we love, Los Angeles.
We have learned to say “Thank You” in 5 languages. We have met so many friends and fellow travelers on the road, in villages, small towns, and cities. Amazingly we saw people we met in other places we have traveled--like Alaska. Wine in Spain and Portugal is simply red or white. Mediterranean and Atlantic seafood is some of the best we have tasted. Love the grilled sardines! We learned to cook Tajine in Morocco, play flamingo music in Spain, and Gnaoua Music in Morocco. And now some of the posts on our Facebook are in languages we cannot read.
We thank you our family and friends for the inspiration! It is time for us to chill and spend time with family and friends at home. And of course, catch up with our granddaughters who are growing up so fast. In the spring we will start again in Portugal and set our GPS towards Mongolia and of course the many countries in between—Basque Country, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Turkey, and the Stan countries. We learned that the world is enormous when you are driving around it! So much to learn ... “the more we see, the less we know.”

Map 2 Morocco June 2019
Friends we reached the max on map entry on google maps so this is our second map. Our 90-day visa for Morocco expired so we drove to Ceuta, Spain, to extend our visas. The drive to Ceuta and back to Essaouira for the Gnaoua Music Festival included many awesome stops along the Atlantic coast.
